STEUBENVILLE — Volunteers throughout the community got “started” Saturday morning with the kickoff of the American Heart Association’s Tri-County Start! Heart Walk.
“This walk is a call to action for all Americans to become physically active and to follow proper eating habits so they can live longer, healthier lives,” Donna Ashcraft, division director of the American Heart Association, explained.
Volunteers, who had set out for weeks before the event to gather sponsors for their individual or team walks around the campus, began assembling at Jefferson Community College

Some things off topic (but deal with sports!)
Sun, August 31, 2008 @ 2:40PM
Alright. This is really beginning to bother me. Jericho Scott, a 9 year old boy is told he's not allowed to pitch in his community league. The reason being, he throws to fast. He throws to fast? I don't think I've ever heard of anything so asinine before. I agree 100% with Jericho's mother when she said "I think it’s discouraging when you’re telling a 9-year-old you’re too good at something". NINE people. The child is nine. It's not like he's cheating...we all remember 2001 and the little league world series, right? That was cheating. Anyway, what was the leagues solution? Disband the whole team, send the kids to other teams and give back the $50 registration fee. Thats abso-frickin-lutely fantabulous. Lets all really make this nine year old feel bad. “I feel sad,” he said. “I feel like it’s all my fault nobody could play.”

XM, No Static At All
Fri, September 5, 2008 @ 1:06PM
It's back. It's in my car. And I can't get enough of it. It's my XM Radio, which I haven't used in my car for nearly a year. It used to have a home in Norman Thunderbaum, my former Thunderbird, but I never could bring myself to mount it in The Enrico Cruiser, my late father's PT. I guess it was OK to put glue on my brother's old T-Bird's dash, but not on my dad's car. But now, thanks to the discovery of an industrial suction-cup mounting thing and the help of my son, The Drummer, who knows how to hide wiring, my XM is back on the road. Just in time to listen to the POTUS all-president, all-the-time channel during the conventions. Steely Dan may have sung "FM" with the lyric "no static at all," but I like to think of the modern version as "XM, no junk I don't want to hear at all." Ahhh. And merging with Sirius can only give me a bunch more selections, right? Or will it simply require more equipment purchases?

Greatest Weekend Ever
Tue, September 2, 2008 @ 8:46AM
This Labor Day weekend might of been one of the highlights of my short life. I was fortunate to be able to enjoy a great dinner and evening with College football stars, Hall of Fame coaches and NFL champions. I attached a few photos that I took with a few of the people in attendance. The event was all part of the Friends of Coal Prep Classic, but that night was all about Don Nehlen. The many in attendance that night clapped, and clapped, and clapped some more for all the tributes that were made to Don Nehlen. Jim Tressel, Bobby Bowden, Famous Amos, Aaron Beasley, Lou Holtz, were just a few of the people that made tribute to Don Nehlen that night. Quincy Wilson was in attendance and made a short but sweet tribute to Don and I just wish they would of shown his run against Miami when he bulled over a Miami defender and jumped over him to walk into the endzone. The place would surely of erupted if they would of shown that clip. Roy Firestone was the MC of the night and that guy is amazing.

Bad at blogging
Sun, August 31, 2008 @ 6:04PM
I'm a sorry excuse for a blogger. It occurs to me periodically that I should be blogging weekly but at last check I blogged when August was just beginning. Now August is ending, and tomorrow is Labor Day, for heaven's sake. I think I'm more old school and technologically challenged than you might imagine so maybe that's why I'm blog resistant. You know, when I talk on the portable phone at home, I catch myself walking toward the old-fashioned land line phone hanging on the wall when I'm about to end my conversation, and I set the phone down on the kitchen counter closest to it, as if this is where the remote phone has to be to disconnect. I have a cell phone but no way do I text message. Too much effort. And isn't that why you have a phone in the first place? To pick it up and call? To reach out and use your voice and say hello? Text messaging is just another excuse to mutilate the English language. Yikes! I am making some progress. No longer do I try to play both sides of a CD.

Week One High School Football
Sun, August 24, 2008 @ 9:49PM
Big Red could have one of the fastest defenses in the state. They are quick to the ball and held Indian Creek junior standout running back Doren Thomas, a 10.9 sprinter, in check. Trey Wiggins looks like he can make plays, Branko Busick is a man-child and Dwight Macon will make plays. But, they are only three members of a tradition-rich football program who prepares for Akron Buchtel to invade Harding Stadium. Kudos to Indian Creek who has stepped in the past two years, and will do so for two more years, to open with Steubenville at Harding Stadium. You know, there isn't a long line of suitors for that spot The Redskins played better this year than last season and I believe they are in a better place and a better frame of mind than 12 months ago. They now go on the road to face an Oak Glen squad with question marks because of a new coaching staff and, rumor has it, a new attitude. Harrison Central had a huge road win against Claymont, even though the

Mom's Taxi & Buses
Thu, September 4, 2008 @ 2:01PM
So I've got ten minutes before I have to pick up the kids. The other day, I was on time -- just on time, mind you -- to pick up the kids, and the principal strolls over, smiles and says: "Oh, you're early." MORTIFICATION. Apparently, my inability to get the off the phone or escape an interview is so notorious that showing up on time is perceived as something usual for me. I so have to fix that this year. I would have them on the bus, but, frankly, Hancock County Schools Transportation Department hates me. Last year, they told me my then five-year-old and eight-year-old had to walk down to the end of our housing development to catch the bus, the distance of several blocks. Yeah, right, not happening. I called and explained the situation. They asked me if the kids could cut through the neighbors' yards to the next street over, where the stop was close. Um, no. No. 1, it's rude, and No. 2, my children have not yet demonstrated the ability to
