County budget cut 18 percent
STEUBENVILLE — Jefferson County commissioners Thursday hammered out a 2010 budget that will result in layoffs at departments throughout the general fund. Commissioners cut departments by about 18 percent to bring the general fund budget down to $11.3 million. The general fund this year totaled $13.4 million, which included a $1 million carryover from the 2008 budget. There won’t be any carryover money into the 2010 budget. Revenue from the county sales tax is down by more than 10 percent this year and is not expected to increase in 2010. The county auditor’s office also reported the county will be receiving $700,000 less in local government funds from the state. Revenue from interest on investments has decreased by $500,000 from last year. Money from fees, such as real estate transfers and court fines, also is down. Certain state and federal grants have been eliminated.
