Oak Glen going for title No. 14
NEW MANCHESTER — Thirty years separated the first and second West Virginia state wrestling championships for Oak Glen High School. Between the second and 14th, there has been no separation. Thirteen state championships in a row for the Golden Bears and everyone outside of northern Hancock County in West Virginia is patiently waiting for Oak Glen to take a break. Larry Shaw has been the wrestling coach at Oak Glen for 31 years now and for the last 13 he has been the coach of the West Virginia Class A-AA state champion. Don’t think for a minute that Shaw is thinking that the 14th is in the bag. “It’s another year, a new year,” Shaw said in preparation of the 2009-2010 mat season. “We’ll have a lot of new kids in our lineup this year. We graduated eight seniors last year.” Re-tooling. Re-loading. Re-charging. Whatever it’s called at Oak Glen, the Golden Bears seem to have a knack for putting together great teams even when graduation seemingly takes its toll.
