Big Red boys

November 24, 2009

STEUBENVILLE — By November, most schools have packed up their pads, put away their helmets and turned their attention from the gridiron to the hard wood. Most schools have, but not Big Red. At press time, the Steubenville football team was still knee deep in the playoffs. The Big Red athletes have not yet traded in their cleats for sneakers. Steubenville basketball coach Mike Haney is used to. For three of the last four years, Big Red has advanced to the state football finals. “It’s a good thing,” said Haney, who is also an assistant football coach. “We have to play catch up and when it’s all done we have to contend with some bumps and bruises and get healthy, but the good thing about basketball is that everybody makes the tournament and it’s not until the end of February. “We start later with our guys in football, but by February we hope to be at the top of our game.” Of Big Red’s nine main players, five are still playing football.
