May 19, 2013

To the editor: I am compelled to express my utter disappointment and sadness over the decision to seize and euthanize the pet raccoon belonging to Cora Peterson of Smithfield....

Three times I have e-mailed a letter the editor of this newspaper; revamped each time but told never received. All letters addressed the allegations of abuse and unwarranted killing of dogs when the kennels are never full. All the revamped letters included these two paragraphs:

Many people wrote letters to the commissioners questioning the activities going on at this $1.6 million facility and those people have yet to receive even a phone call acknowledging receipt of their letters much less any reassurance that these concerns are seriously being addressed. Even the evidence that I have compiled, including requesting a return phone call from the two commissioners I telephoned, have yet to be taken seriously. AND Folks, it is time to question if the group that the county commissioners entrusted with the care and protection of those animals actually looked the other way only to make themselves out to be the heroes in solving the problem of abuse at the shelter.

Well the Humane society needs to be revamped and looked into, they need this person fired and sued. This animals shelter / workers only care about themselves and how to make their image better. If it wouldn't hurt the animals, I say boycott anything to do with the JCHS and JCAS. There are way better shelters and society in Ohio for people to donate too, and we shouldn't have to put up with this. OUR tax dollars paid for their building, thinking it would help. Our complaints are being shut out and not heard!

deekay2....the owner of the raccoon was making arrangements for help when the wildlife officers showed up. I am one of the people who reached out to her to help but she was on the phone with another individual who pleaded with the men.

KittensRUS...the humane officer is not a county employee and is not voted in. This person is employed by the humane society.

@Kittenrus,

That is the problem. We do not need a humane officer! All he/she can be is another bureaucrat that must find a job to do, people to exploit to justify a paycheck.

@ DeeKay2....The owner DID NOT want the animal killed. The HUMANE OFFICER did! Rather than helping people, she rather tick off the community. Time to vote out the current one and bring in a new blood that will actually care about the job instead of someone that wants to abuse the power.

I dont agree with the way any of this was delt with.You cant turn your back on a baby like that, but at the same time .A year?.He should have been introduced to the outside mid summer. I've had everything from crows, groundhogs, skunks and yes rac*****. They should never be kept indoors, or caged for that length of time. Why didnt she put his cage outside and eventually leave the door open? Would have solved the entire problem.

Sorry to see that the owner would rather see the raccoon killed instead of giving it to one of the local zoo's who would have taken it.

I use to say of my sons - "give them an inch and they'll take a mile". These days I now apply the thought to the idiots in goverment at any level. Sadly thou, the idiots are'nt satisfied with one mile, they want two and a pint of blood to boot. Humane officer, another name for an idiot who needs help tying shoe laces.

It is my understanding you can get a license to have wild animals, but it might be harder now after the indecent when a owner let the animals out and committed suicide.

This is the problem with government. Idiots vote idiots into office and the end result is that they control what a person can do, what they can have as a pet and if they do not get what they want, they come to your home armed, and take away what is yours.

She made the first and only mistake. Letting this "humane officer" in her house without a warrant or just cause, never let anyone you don't know in or on your property. Only person that could have made the fatal call is the humane officer, and hopefully she can't sleep at night for all the trouble she is causing this area.

It is my understanding that, since Meeko was found on the property where he lived for a year of being cared for, then he could have been released on said property. Mrs. Peterson was told by the humane officer that she had 30 days to teach Meeko to forage for food and then release him. Question: Who made the phone call resulting in Meeko being seized and euthanized less than 10 days later? Question: Were proper procedures followed? Question: Could the Peterson family have kept Meeko under a permit or license? Question: Why is it apparently legal (Ohio Rev. Code) to purchase a raccoon at a flea market or other means (Amish sales in Wayne County)but not allowable in this case? QUESTION: Was the Peterson home entered legally and without threat or intimidation upon the knowledge of his existence inside this home?
