Demolition moving forwardNovember 13, 2008
The planned demolition of the Cove School building is moving forward.
Pulice Construction Co. started getting the Cove School site ready for demolition with the help of the Weirton Sanitation Department Wednesday morning.
The contract was awarded to Pulice Construction Co. for the demolition of the school, which is expected to begin demolition sometime in the coming weeks.
Joe Pulice said that he was just finishing the last of the details that needed to be taken care of before he can set up equipment for the demolition of the structure.
Several city trucks were on the site before 9 a.m. Wednesday for the site preparations. Workers said that they were there to help Pulice locate all of the sewer lines located in the building. Pulice stated that the sewer lines had to be capped off before the demolition can begin.
“I don’t expect capping the lines to take more than a few hours,” said Pulice.
He also stated that there wasn’t much else to prepare after the lines were capped off. Workers said the demolition is likely to begin next week.
Earlier this year, the members of Weirton City Council voted to move forward with demolition of the structure, which closed down as a school in the early 1990s, following years of discussion. Several groups have proposed various uses for the structure; however, none have come to fruition.
