De-He-Wa-Mis tours Cambridge museum
De-He-Wa-Mis Chapter 479 of Questers took a field trip to the National Museum of Cambridge Glass for its October meeting.
The museum houses one of the world's most extensive collections of Cambridge glass and has some tools, molds and etching plates used to manufacture the glass.
Members learned Cambridge offered gas wells, coal mines and a railroad to bring in raw materials and ship the glass. James Bennett came from Boston to run the company that produced its first piece of glass in May 1902.
It's products were shipped to England, Australia and South America. Members also saw a film that showed how the glass was made. Lunch and a business meeting was held at Thea's Restaurant after the tour.
A check was sent to Historic Fort Steuben to be used for signs, posters and displays for the Native American building. The money came from a Simmons Trust grant.
The next meeting will be Thursday at Froehlich's Classic Corner. Marilynn Johnson will speak on the history of ice skates.
