GAHANNA - AEP Ohio is offering incentives to customers to become more energy efficient this summer.
AEP Ohio customers are being offered an incentive to recycle an older extra refrigerator or freezer in June or July. Instead of the normal $35 recycling incentive, customers will receive a $50 rebate through the AEP Ohio Appliance Recycling Program.
In addition, customers are being offered two new appliance rebate offers from AEP Ohio as part of its Residential EnergyStar Appliance Rebate Program.
Customers who are recycling an old refrigerator or freezer also may recycle an old working room air conditioner and AEP Ohio will provide a $25 rebate toward a new EnergyStar certified model under the recycling program.
AEP said refrigerators and freezers made before 1990 may use as
much as 1,500 kilowatt hours year, much more than newer, energy-efficient models.
To participate in the program, call (877) 545-4112 or visit gridSMARTohio.com to schedule a free pickup. Refrigerators or freezers must be at least 10 cubic feet in capacity and operational at the time of pick up. Room air conditioners only will be taken if the customer recycles a refrigerator or freezer.
The old units are sent to an appliance recycling facility operated by JACP Environmental, which converts nearly 95 percent of each refrigerator, including metals, plastic, oils and foam insulation, into recyclable materials.
The appliance recycling incentive returns to $35 beginning Aug. 1.
For the appliance rebates, AEPOhio will offer a $15 mail-in rebate for residential customers who purchase an EnergyStar certified dehumidifier and a $25 mail-in rebate for customers who buy an EnergyStar certified room air conditioner and recycling an old, working unit.
The EnergyStar appliance purchase rebates will run through Aug. 31.
The rebates are available at participating retailers or on-line at gridSMARTOhio.com and must be submitted no later than Sept. 15. The purchaser must be a current AEPOhio residential service customer, residing in Ohio.
