Remembering favorite foods we enjoyed

In my household, we seem to be getting worse at fixing food to eat.

But we're very good, however, at talking about food all the time, including foods we liked to eat when we were growing up.

Such was the conversation that unfolded the other evening at, of all places, my mother's kitchen table.

It's not the exact same table from my childhood youth, but it was definitely the same room where as a kid I made myself a fast fan of my mother's when I declared every meal she prepared and placed before me on the kitchen table to be "my favorite dish."

My mother says I was such a sweet child.

Notice the "was" used in the past tense.

Any way, one of my favorite dishes growing up was chuck roast with potatoes and carrots. Simple but satisfying.

And the second day, the leftovers tasted even better.

Why is that with some dishes?

Better Half reminisced about how good stuffed veal pocket was, a dish his mom made for special Sunday dinners when veal breast from Junedale's on South Fourth Street was on the Kiaski grocery list.

A round steak pounded to paper thinness, then fried in butter, Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce and seasoned with garlic powder was good eating, too, he said, especially with homemade french fries.

Add to that list city chicken made with pork and veal, cabbage rolls, chicken gizzards (yes, chicken gizzards) and the Kiaski version of chop suey made with pork.

In the summers, the Hout table seemed suited exclusively for vegetarians as a meal could easily constitute a huge pot of corn on the cob and plates of sliced tomatoes, all of it fresh from the premises.

It was messy eating but good eating.

Bring on the napkins.

Surrender your appetite.

If there was a chocolate cake with caramel icing in the house, it was a good day. A very good day.

In the snack department, my mother marveled at how her little brother could find happiness during their Wheeling childhood days simply because a bowl had three ingredients in it -bread soaked with milk and sugar.

To each his own taste bud tantalizer, I guess.

I don't think since childhood that I've had a bread snack that always satisfied - a piece of toast with butter, sugar and cinnamon.

And Better Half said - no monkeying around here - that he ate a lot of banana sandwiches in his day not to mention a lot of dippy eggs.

Cholesterol. What's that?

All I know is past talk about food brings on present hunger.

Let's eat.
