STEUBENVILLE - Teddy L. Clark, 34, of 527 Clinton St. was arrested by City Police Thursday in connection with the stabbing death of James E. Daniels Jr., 53, of 990 McKinley Ave.
Clark was charged with murder and was being held at the county jail on a $500,000 bond.
Daniels walked into the police station around 3:10 a.m. Thursday, saying he needed help. Officers discovered he was stabbed in the neck and offered medical help until Daniels could be transported to Trinity Medical Center West. Daniels was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital but died at the hospital.
Daniels told police he was at Froehlich's Classic Corner and gave an unknown man a ride to Highland Avenue, where he was assaulted.
Police said Daniels was stabbed in the neck by the left ear, and the wound extended down to the throat.
City Police Chief William McCafferty said Froehlich's has an "excellent" video camera system that showed Daniels and Clark drinking together. The chief said witnesses saw the two men leave together.
McCafferty said police have not formulated a motive for the stabbing.
Police were called around 9:15 to the 400 block of South Fourth Street about Clark claiming he was having thoughts of suicide. McCafferty said Clark was taken by ambulance to Trinity Medical Center West to talk to a counselor. Clark wasn't considered a suspect at the time but became one a short time later after detectives viewed the surveillance video and talked to employees at Froehlich's, the chief said.
Officers kept an eye on Clark at the hospital until his arrest around 2:30 p.m., the chief said.
Police detectives Thursday afternoon were searching Clark's Clinton Street home for evidence in connection with the stabbing.
Police arrested Clark in July 2010 on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon.
According to police reports, Clark was assaulted at the Spot Bar on South Fourth Street and went home intoxicated to get a pistol.
Police were notified about Clark having a gun and arrested him. Police reported Clark at the time said he was going to shoot the person who assaulted him.
Clark also has an assault arrest in January 2010 and a criminal mischief charge in April 2009.
