WHEELING - About 130 amateur mathematicians in grades fourth through 12th competed at the West Virginia Region 6 Math Field Day Saturday at Wheeling Park High School, with 28 moving on to the state tournament.

"This is a competition comprised of mental math, physical estimation, a written exam and relay questions," said Sue Hvizdos, a WPHS math teacher and coordinator of the event, noting that students from Ohio, Brooke, Marshall and Wetzel counties participated. She said the state championship is set for April 21 at Concord University in southern West Virginia.

Three students in each of grades fourth through ninth will advance to that state competition, while a total of 10 students in grades 10th through 12th will head to Concord. Judges also selected alternates from each grade level to go to the next round, while they also picked Estimation Room winners for grades fourth through eighth.

Though Brooke County won the overall team competition on Saturday, Hvizdos said students from all counties performed well.

Ohio County Schools Deputy Superintendent Dianna Vargo congratulated all of the competitors during the awards ceremony.

"We wish you all the best of luck in the future," she said.
