I am a member of the Weirton community.
I grew up on Marland Heights, went to Sacred Heart of Mary grade school and played basketball for Madonna High School. I attended and graduated from WVU and was employed locally for more than 10 years. Six years ago, I moved out of the area because Weirton offered very little hope for a young family raising small children.
Recently, I moved back into the area because I missed my family and longed for the nostalgic days of my youth. I longed for my children to run and play on Marland Heights and to swim at Marland Heights Pool. However, instead of the glory days of my youth, I was greeted with dirty and pot-holed streets, empty and dilapidated buildings and an apparent lack of general concern regarding the growth of the community by our political leaders.
We have a great opportunity to enjoy an economic boom with the natural gas industry coming to the area, however, Weirton needs to position itself positively by cleaning up the streets and providing wholesome activities for young adults and families to enjoy in the community. I will be at each and every council meeting to beat the drum of renewal and rejuvenation, and I implore more community members to join me in trying to invigorate our once beautiful and thriving city.
