To the editor:
In the two years since the passage of the historic health care law, it has already benefited countless people, in Steubenville and across the state of Ohio.
As the Herald-Star noted ("Health center fills vital need," April 5), the Jefferson County Fourth Street Health Center is meeting a vital need in Steubenville. The JCFSHC serves only a fraction of the approximately 20,000 local residents currently living without health insurance. Many of these individuals - our neighbors, friends, co-workers - have chronic health problems, such as diabetes or heart disease.
We all deserve peace of mind when it comes to our health. That's why the health care law eliminates lifetime caps on coverage, bans the insurance company practice of dropping individuals when they are sick or denying coverage to individuals with pre-existing conditions.
These are important and necessary reforms to a health care system that just wasn't working for our country - and certainly not for our community. I'm grateful that President Barack Obama fought to pass the health care law and protect the health of millions of Americans.
