City Girl Scouts plan dog walk fundraiser

May 15, 2012
From staff reports , The Herald-Star

TORONTO - The members of the city Girl Scouts Troop 3192 are planning to go to the dogs - as a fundraiser, that is.

From noon to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, girls enrolled in the troop plan to walk city dog-owners' canines for a donation of their choice. The walk also will include tips on basic dog-owning, according to Amy Rice, troop leader for seniors and cadets.

"It's a fundraiser, but it's also informational as well," said Rice, adding any dog weighing more than 40 pounds will have to be accompanied on the walk with its owner. "We'll have dog-walking tips we'll go over before we start the walk. We're going to begin at the Roosevelt ( Recreation Center on Loretta Avenue)."

Those participating also will get some extra treats as well, said Rice.

"After the walk everyone that registers will receive a 'doggy bag,'" Rice continued. "It will have information from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and hopefully the Humane Society. It will also contain coupons for dog care and a Scout-made dog toy."

Rice said the walk will continue for a few blocks in the neighborhood, and the length of the walk "will depend on how many people register."

The idea for the dog walk came from girls enrolled in the troop, said Rice, adding there were lots of dog lovers in the Scouts.

"Every year I have the girls pick want they want to do," she said. "This year they wanted to do something with dogs. I suggested a walk, and they thought it was a great idea. There are a lot of dog lovers in the troop. They pick what they want to do, and it's my job to make it happen."

Rice said the troop was formed three years ago, and currently there are 20 girls involved in the troop. Girls in kindergarten and first-graders are Daisies; second- and third-graders are Brownies; fourth- and fifth-graders are Juniors; sixth- and seventh-graders are Cadets; eighth- and ninth-graders Seniors; and 10th-graders and older are Ambassadors.

"I'm also the services unit administrator for the (Girl Scout) Golden Hills Service Unit," said Rice, adding the unit covers the Toronto, Edison and Harrison school districts.

To register for the walk or for information on joining the scouts, call (740) 632-6595.
