Republican agenda bad for America

September 2, 2012
The Herald-Star

To the editor:

For the 33rd time, Republicans in Congress have voted against giving new health care coverage to the American people. Does that sound like a political party that's looking after your best interests?

Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, and U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Marietta, have voted against helping uninsured people get life-saving health insurance coverage. They've voted to let the uninsured go bankrupt if they get seriously sick. Is this why they were sent to Congress? As they vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act, they have no alternative plan to help insure the 36,000 who die each year because they can't afford to into the hospital. They've never voted against tax cuts for the top 2 percent, but can't see their way clear to vote for health care, extension of unemployment benefits, food stamps, job creation legislation or tax breaks for working people. They vote not as their constituents want them to, but as big money tells them to.

The Affordable Care Act does one thing that overrides the dangers that come with a serious illness. It prevents people from losing everything they've worked for because they got sick and would be facing bankruptcy. The act also states that if you now have health insurance and are satisfied with it, you can keep it. You don't have to do anything. If you don't have coverage, you can't be turned down for past illnesses.

These boneheads in Congress have only one plan for the uninsured - don't get sick, and if you do get sick, die quickly.

One last fact: Both of these people have voted for the Paul Ryan budget plan that would privatize Medicare and Social Security. It would give you a $6,000 voucher to cover your health care costs every year. That's about a day-and-a-half in the hospital. Are they serious? They want more tax breaks for the mega-rich. That, they say, will prime the trickle-down pump and create jobs. I don't know about you, but I'm sick of being trickled on.

They've focused their time during the last three-and-a-half years trying to make sure the president is not re-elected. In the meantime, everything that needs done has been put on the shelf until after the election. They refuse to do their jobs because they've been told to focus on winning the next election, not helping the American people.

They vote against anything that would help the middle class and the working poor. Why would you vote for this kind of representation? If you do, you are voting against yourself, your family and the country. Take a hard look at them before you vote, then vote for yourself and economic recovery. By the way, Speaker John Boehner, where are the jobs? Ryan as vice president? God help us.

Remember, a vote for the Republican agenda is November is a vote for bankruptcy if you get sick; privatization of Social Security, Medicare and education funding; and a no-jobs initiative funded by more tax cuts for the rich.
