District convention planned Oct. 13

Leaders of clubs in the Northern District of the General Federation of Women's Clubs are making plans for the 99th-annual Northern District Convention, which will be held Oct. 13 in McMechen.

Jo-Ellen Wright is Northern District president. Cassie Sherman, president of Woman's Club of McMechen, will serve as convention chairman.

The keynote speaker will be Carol Allen of Princeton, W.Va., who is GFWC-WV president and has chosen the theme "Brighten the Way For Others" and Kno Kom, a camp for youth with diabetes, as her special project.

Wright's theme is "Crystallize the Possibilities," and her project is helping the hungry.

Officers for the 2012-14 administration include: Dorothy Hawkes of New Cumberland, first vice president; Lexie Hanket of Moundsville, second vice president; Sandy Smith of Wheeling, recording secretary; and Helen Moren of Bethany, treasurer.

Open house at Richmond museum

The summer series of open houses at the Crew House Museum on Main Street will continue through September with guests welcome to tour the facility from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

The event is sponsored by the Richmond Community Historical Society and is held the second and fourth Sunday of the month through August.

There is no admission charge.

9/11 Candlelight

Vigil service set

The Toronto American Legion Post 86 at Third and Market streets, Toronto, will host a 9/11 Candlelight Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the post.

Following the services, there will be an open house and veterans' murals tour.

Free yellow ribbons to support the troops will be available.

Annual Cigar Night

The third-annual Cigar Night will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Sons of Italy Lodge No. 754, 3348 Belmont St., Bellaire.

Cost is $75 per person with payment in advance necessary. Reservations must be made by Monday. Proceeds benefit the Sons of Italy Lodge No. 754f project.

The evening includes three premium cigars from Klafter's Cigars of New Castle, Pa., and a meal including steak, salad, baked potato, corn on the cob, dessert and two drink tickets.

There will be door prizes to include lighters, cutters and ash trays; Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra music; and two bocce courts available for play

A commitment of 50 attendees is needed to have the event with reservations limited to 60.

Cub Scout Pack No. 415 and Boy Scout Troop 415 will hold their annual open house and sign-up meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Starkdale United Presbyterian Church, Sunset Boulevard.

Women's lock-in

to begin tonight

Wellsville First Baptist Church will host a women's lock-in to the theme "One Night with the King" beginning tonight at 10 p.m. and continuing through 6 a.m. Saturday.

The night will include teaching, praise and worship, prayer and dance. Registration will begin at 9:30 p.m.

Exhibit open to

Bethany alumni

The Bethany College Department of Visual and Performing Arts, the Office of Student Life and the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations invite Bethany alumni to submit works of art in any medium to the "Bethany Alumni Biennial Art Exhibition, A Show of Hands."

The exhibition will be displayed Sept. 20-Oct. 6 in the Renner Art Gallery.

The first such event was held 16 years ago and has continued every few years since then as part of Homecoming Weekend.

All alumni are invited to submit four pieces of work to Kenn Morgan at the Renner Art Gallery, Bethany House, Bethany, W.Va., 26032, by Sept. 18. Artists should label their work with their name, graduation year, address and phone number, title, medium and price (or NFS value). Bethany does not receive a commission on sales.

WSX retirees to

gather for buffet

The Weirton Steel Corp. blast furnace/sinter plant retirees will hold their quarterly old-timers buffet at noon Sept. 19 at the Serbian American Cultural Center on Colliers Way.

Those who have never attended the event must call to make a reservation. Those who have regularly attended will be contacted as usual.

Luncheon Sunday

at St. Paul's

St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Adams Street, Steubenville, will host its monthly soup and sandwich luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.

Featured soups will be chili, vegetable and turkey rice. Sandwiches include sloppy joes and ham salad. Desserts, coffee and tea are included in the price of $6 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under.

Mended Hearts

to meet Monday

The Greater Wheeling Area Chapter 280 of Mended Hearts Inc. will meet Monday at the Ohio Valley Medical Center's Conference Room B.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for light refreshments, and the meeting will start at 7 p.m.

Janel Trovato-Vass, a physician's assistant with cardiologist Dr. Robert Fanning, will discuss defibulators and CHF devices. No reservations are necessary.
