Brooke High Key Club members receive awards

Three Brooke High School Key Club members achieved the President's Volunteer Service Award for the 2011-12 school year.

Brooke High School seniors Jackson Carey and Valerie Peterson both earned the Gold Award with 254 hours and 273 hours, respectively.

And Kelsey Welsh, a 2012 Brooke graduate, earned the Bronze Award, with 113 hours of service to her community.

Each recipient received a personalized certificate and letter from the president of the United States as well as a lapel pin commemorating their efforts.

The award program was established in 2003 by the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation to recognize the valuable contributions that volunteers make in our communities and to encourage more people to serve.

Marilyn McGowan, the club's advisor, said Carey's hours were primarily as a teacher's aide at Grandma's House Day Care and as a volunteer at Weirton Medical Center through their Volunteen program.

A senior, he serves as the Key Club's vice president.

Peterson's hours were primarily as an after-school aide working with children in the After-School Adventures Program held by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program at the Brooke County Senior Center. She also is a volunteer Windsor Heights firefighter.

She helped with a number of other children's activities for a variety of organizations, as well as working with the Wellsburg Kiwanis to make their functions a success, said McGowan.

She is a senior and senior representative for the Key Club.

Welsh volunteered for a variety of Key Club sponsored community activities and performed most of her service hours as a volunteer for local youth sports events.

She served as editor for the club last year.
