Voters should say ‘yes’ to JVS levy

October 19, 2012
The Herald-Star

The Jefferson County Joint Vocational School needs the help of area voters to pass a much-needed 1-mill levy.

Since the school was built in 1975, it has aided and provided students with the skills they need to become productive members of the work force.

The JVS, located in Bloomingdale, serves students from all high schools in Jefferson County and some students from Harrison County. It has and continues to provide a well-rounded background in academics as well as quality education in the trades.

The levy, which will generate about $1.1 million a year during its 10-year life, will allow the school to upgrade its programs and make needed repairs - repairs such as replacing the roof, which is well beyond the patch-it point.

Money generated also would be used to renovate classrooms, update equipment in laboratories, install new heating controls, upgrade the security and fire alarm system and improve parking areas and sidewalks.

Faced with continuing budget cuts, administrators at the school have eliminated programs, reduced the number of employees, obviously delayed making repairs to the facility, limited the purchase of supplies and materials and suspended the purchase of lab equipment.

When students graduate, there's no question that they leave our county's JVS with academic, technical and employability skills that are needed in today's work force. Those who choose to enter the work force immediately have skills that are in demand. Those who decide to enroll in two-year or four-year colleges also are prepared to continue their education.

If the levy passes, the cost to area homeowners will be minimal, approximately 5 cents per day on a home with a value of $70,000. That money will be well spent to say the least, helping students learn the skills they need to obtain gainful employment and become productive workers in our growing communities, as well as taxpayers.

And that's why we ask that you vote "yes" on the JVS levy when you go to the polls on Nov. 6.
