Support your area first

November 4, 2012
The Herald-Star

To the editor:

I felt compelled after a visit back to the Ohio Valley to see a friend to write something that I hope stirs in the minds and hearts of Weirton-area residents.

I live in Kentucky in a town where small businesses are supported first before large chains, but I grew up in the Ohio Valley and once worked in Weirton. With that said, for the last two years I have come back home and got to go to the Haunted School of Terror at the Krazy Bout Sportz complex on Weir Avenue. I chose to go there because, first, they support the children of the community and, second, they are a small business just getting off the ground.

The hard work and effort put into this event was even more evident this year than last with an actual haunted playground with moving playground equipment. What a gift this complex is to this area. I have heard it said so many times in the Ohio Valley that the kids have nothing to do. Here's my question for the Weirton area residents - Where were you? My understanding is there were more people from outside of the Weirton area who came to support them than people that live right here. While the turnout was good and comparable to last year, there was no increase in attendance.

Where is the support for your local small businesses? This facility offers so much beyond the haunted school, including, but not limited to, "Piece by Peace" sensory room for autism and Alzheimer's, comedy nights, birthday parties, battles of the bands, dances, free movie nights, etc. You can't complain about your children having nothing to do if you don't support a great contribution to your community like KBS and the haunted school. As the saying goes, "The grass isn't always greener on the other side." Stay in your own yard and support your hometown community family first. Not that other businesses don't deserve support, but please consider those right here that wanted to put you first when they made a decision to start a business in your town.
