STEUBENVILLE - The Jefferson County grand jury returned 12 indictments Wednesday, including gun charges against two city men.

Ricky L. Smith, 40, of 1324 Pennsylvania Ave. was indicted on single counts of having a weapon as a convicted felon and carrying a concealed weapon.

Police were called to a disturbance at the Pennsylvania Avenue home on Sept. 13. Officers reported seeing Smith outside the home. Smith moved toward a gate but couldn't get it open. An officer reported seeing Smith take something out of his clothing and place it behind the gate.

Smith was taken into custody because of outstanding warrants. Police reported finding a loaded .45-caliber handgun behind the gate.

Smith has prior felony drug convictions in Jefferson County Common Pleas Court, which prevent him from being in possession of a firearm.

Robert L. Bank Jr., 28, of 827 Rosswell Ave. was indicted on single counts of having a weapon as a convicted felon and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle.

Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin said Banks, who already was under indictment in the county for marijuana trafficking, was involved in an incident in the 300 block of Lawson Avenue on Sept. 21 Hanlin said Banks walked into a home with a gun but left. Officers responded but Banks returned and was found in possession of a firearm, Hanlin said.

Matthew D. Lanham Jr., 20, of 125 Springfield Township Road 275, Bergholz, was indicted on charges of perjury and escape.

Lanham escaped Oct. 20 from the Eastern Ohio Correction Center outside Wintersville and was apprehended four days later. Hanlin said Lanham lied during testimony at a preliminary hearing.

Brent E. King, 25, of 714 Euclid Ave., Toronto, single counts of breaking and entering and theft.

Thomas J. Smith, 34, of 1215 Pennsylvania Ave., felony aggravated burglary and felony domestic violence. Smith broke into his former wife's house on Sept. 17 in the city and assaulted her.
