STEUBENVILLE - Two men are in custody after they were caught trying to break into a home on Vireo Drive, outside Wintersville, on Wednesday morning, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department reported.
The sheriff's department reported a neighbor on Vireo Drive saw two men opening a window at a house next door around 9:30 a.m. The neighbor got a gun and confronted the men, who took off running.
The sheriff's department reported an elderly man was asleep in his bed inside the home that the burglars were trying to enter.
Several police agencies, including Cross Creek, Wintersville and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, searched the area and found the two men hiding behind a business on Bantam Ridge Road.
Taken into custody were Harry W. Richard Jr., 26, of 500 Wallace St., Brilliant, and Ronald R. Hawthorne Jr., 30, of 3102 county Road 25, Rayland.
Deputies searched the men and found gift cards, cash, a Kindle Fire and a couple of iPhones. The deputies were able to determine the owner of the Kindle Fire and contacted that person at work. That person went to their home in the 100 block of Bantam Ridge Road and discovered the house was broken into.
A TV and jewelry also were taken. A deputy said those items were found in the woods behind the home.
Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said Richard and Hawthorne are suspects in other recent break-ins.
The sheriff's department was expected to go to the county prosecutor's office today to file charges.
