Election canvass completed

NEW CUMBERLAND - Hancock County elections officials have completed a canvass of the Nov. 6 election results and expected to certify the county races sometime today.

The canvass was conducted on Tuesday, with Hancock County Commissioners Mike Swartzmiller and Dan Greathouse, two ballot commissioners and Hancock County Clerk Eleanor Straight voting on the challenges.

Vote totals in the county races were not appreciably changed as a result of the canvass, which is held to consider provisional and absentee ballots, Straight said.

"We had quite a few people that weren't registered to vote that wanted to vote anyway. We can't turn them away," Straight said.

Those ballots were not counted.

Elections results cannot be certified until 48 hours after the canvass, she said. Local races in which totals will be certified today are county commissioner, prosecuting attorney, sheriff, assessor and magistrate.

Statewide races, such as House of Delegates and governor, will be certified once all 55 counties have completed their canvass process, Straight said.
