WINTERSVILLE - Indian Creek Middle School sixth-grade science teacher Michelle Minto believes in giving her students the ultimate hands-on experience.
Minto spoke to school board members Thursday night about the use of a blended curriculum.
"I have incorporated a number of hands-on activities as well as experimental practices in the classroom to make science more interesting," Minto explained. "We have a scientist of the week recognition each Friday and the students really enjoy performing different experiments. However, we still read and discuss each chapter together and make sure that the students understand the terminology as well."
Minto's approach has earned her the chance to present at the National Science Convention in April in San Antonio. She asked the board for approval to attend the convention as well as for any financial backing it might be able to provide.
The board then heard an update on the middle school project from Angie LaTessa, project manager for Richard L. Bowen and Associates.
"The building is coming along wonderfully," she said. "It is very colorful and the technology is coming along great. It really looks beautiful and it is moving along right on schedule."
Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade district students will begin attending classes in the new building after the Christmas break, Superintendent John Rocchi noted.
