Retail sales again show increase

STEUBENVILLE - Retail sales in Jefferson County increased slightly more than 12 percent in September compared to the same period last year.

Jefferson County Treasurer Raymond M. Agresta said retail sales for September totaled $57.9 million, generating $868,646 in piggyback sales tax revenue for the county. Agresta said piggyback sales tax receipts for September 2011 generated $775,188, based on retail sales of $51.67 million.

Retail sales in Jefferson County have averaged $61.08 million a month this year, compared to $54.97 million a month during the past four years.

UMW 1304 to meet Saturday

HOPEDALE - The United Mine Workers of America Local 1304 will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at Capraros in Hopedale, according to Don McLaughlin, recording secretary.

Festival helps open Advent season

STEUBENVILLE - Usher in the Advent season with the annual Advent Festival of Lessons and Carols at Franciscan University of Steubenville at 7 p.m. Dec. 4 in Christ the King Chapel.

This celebration features the university's chorale and the Schola Cantorum Franciscana, under the direction of Paul Weber, associate professor of music. During the program, carols with be interspersed with Scripture readings to tell the story leading up to the birth of Christ.

The service of lessons and carols originated in 1880 at Truro Cathedral in Cornwall, England, when the rector prepared a simple service of readings for Christmas. The Advent version seeks to reclaim the significance of the preparatory season leading up to the Nativity with a combination of hymns and Scripture readings.

The event is free and open to the public.

Food collection set in Brilliant

BRILLIANT - The Brilliant Volunteer Fire Department will collect nonperishable food items for families in need from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday before the Wells Township Christmas Parade.

The parade is scheduled to get under way at 3 p.m.
