Brightway sponsoring chili cook-off

The Brightway Center, located on county Road 15 outside Smithfield, is sponsoring a Chili Cook-Off on Feb. 9 with a call out for all good chili makers to participate and compete for a $50 prize.

Those interested in participating should submit an application to the Brightway Center by noon on Friday.

The "People's Choice" vote will determine the $50 winner.

Tasters will be charged to taste all the entries and go back for more when they find one they like the most.

Virginia Young is chairman of the event.

Forms can be obtained from her, at the center or from service board members Sherry Matthews or Shirley McCartney.

This is the first fundraiser to be held by the group.

Sands of Time at Country Friends

Country Friends will host the Sands of Time band Saturday at the Memorial Hall located at 402 Old Police Lodge Road, Colliers.

Country Friends has events every Monday, Friday and Saturday at the hall. The doors open at 6 p.m. each Saturday, and the dance starts at 7 p.m.

On Monday and Friday nights, the doors open at 4 p.m., and open mic begins at 6 p.m. Participants can bring a covered dish if they desire for the meal that begins at 5 p.m.

Country Friends Foundation Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Christian friendship and brotherly love through music. All proceeds go to charity. For information, call (304) 527-4253 or (304) 479-1270. The website is www.countryfriendsfoundation.com.

Winemakers part of Feb. 9 event

The Tri-State Winemakers Club held its January meeting at the Wellsburg Elks Club with Rick Parker presiding.

Susan and Denny Johnston were hosts for the meeting attended by 20 members.

Treasurer Linda Cole is collecting dues of $10 per person.

At the March meeting, the nominating committee will present a slate of officers to be considered.

The club will be participating in the first wine-tasting held by the Weirton Elks Club on Feb. 9 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

Susan and Jim Zorbini will serve as hosts of the Feb. 14 Valentine's Day meeting at the Wellsburg Elks at 7 p.m. Guests are welcome.

Alpha Tau chapter members meet

The Alpha Tau Chapter of West Virginia Alpha Delta Kappa held their February meeting at the Swaney Memorial Library.

President Fran Jones presided. Chaplain Donna Durkin gave the "Thought of the Day." Reports were given by Corresponding Secretary Shirley Washam, Recording Secretary Donna Bohach and Kathy Griffith, treasurer. Committee reports also were given.

Sheri Marsella, Zumba instructor, led a fitness activity. Karen Oyster, Michelle Bernardi, Michelle Turner and Debby Churella were hostesses.

Mended Hearts dinner Feb. 11

The Greater Wheeling Area Chapter No. 280 of the Mended Hearts Inc. will hold its annual dinner meeting Feb. 11 in honor of Heart Month.

Members and guests will meet at 6 p.m. in the meeting room at Perkins in Wheeling and order from the menu. The guest speakers will be Dr. Ahmad Rahbar, whose topic will be "The Vein Clinic." To make a reservation, call Betsy at (304) 242-6444 or Mary at (304) 280-5221.
