Special speakers at Adena UMC

The Rev. Henry Mooney, a United Methodist elder, recipient of the UMC East Ohio Conference Denman Award and an area radio talk show host, will be the featured speaker at the Adena United Methodist Church on Sunday at the 9:30 a.m. service.

The music for the service will be provided by pianist Mary Lou Mooney and vocal soloist Anita Jackson, leader of the church laity.

On Sunday, February 10th, Alva Kinney, voted "Lay Speaker of the Year" from the Ohio Valley District United Methodist Church for noteworthy work both in and out of the district, will be the featured speaker on Feb. 10.

The Rev. Raymond "Drew" McPeek is the pastor of Adena UMC.

The events are open to the public.

St. Agnes CWC

plans card party

After attending Mass, the St. Agnes Catholic Woman's Club held their January meeting in the Parish Hall with Joanne Raha presiding.

The Rev. James Dunfee gave the opening and closing prayers.

It was announced that the annual spring card party will be held on April 21 in the parish hall.

Reports were given on confirmation, the breakfast held Jan. 6 and the change in the Mass schedule.

The members voted to give a donation to the sister diocese in Peru. A donation also is being given to the Order of the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

The March meeting is being changed to March 19 because of Holy Week.

Barbara Crugnale won the drawing and the door prize. Hostesses for the evening were Mary Louise Boka, Bea Johns, Mary Karovic, Jean Mazik and Mary Alice Mitchell.

The CWC's next meeting will be held Feb. 26 with Rita Carubia, Pat Cramblett and Dorothy Mazik as hostesses.

Quinn celebrates Black History

The Quinn Memorial AME Church lay organization will be presenting Black History highlights throughout the month of February.

The schedule will be:

Sunday: Betty Simpson, recitation of "Crystal Stairway;"

Feb. 10: Jacqueline Gibson, highlighting Bishop Richard Allen, first bishop of the AME Church;

Feb. 17: "In God's Hand" mime group under the direction of Renee Thompson;

Feb. 24: Ivy Jo Smith, Black History highlights.

The church's senior choir will be singing negro spirituals each Sunday under the direction of Delores Wiggins, minister of music. Patricia Fletcher will introduce each group.

The Rev. Charles Simpson is the pastor of Quinn Memorial AME Church, which is located at 515 North St., Steubenville.

Sweetheart dinner at Zion United

Zion United Church of Christ located at 139 N. Fifth St., Steubenville, will host a "Sweetheart Dinner" after the 11 a.m. worship service on Feb. 10. Cost of the ham loaf dinner is $8 for adults and $4 for children age 12 and under. It is open to the public. For information, call the church at (740) 282-1793.

Pancake supper

at Weirton church

St Thomas Episcopal Church in Weirton will hold its pancake supper on Feb. 12 from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per person.

Avella church

having fundraiser

The St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church Altar Society will hold a pancake and sausage breakfast from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 10 at the church hall located at 176 Cross Creek Road, Avella, Pa.

The cost is $6 for adults and $2 for children. Take-out is available.
