Teacher contracts focus at Edison board meeting

HAMMONDSVILLE - Teachers' contracts were discussed during Tuesday's Edison school board meeting.

Layoff of some staff members is looming for the next school year as part of the district's budget recovery plan, according to Bill Beattie, superintendent.

"The board voted to suspend the teaching contracts at the end of the 2012-13 school year," said Beattie, adding the suspensions include positions for teachers, classified staff and an administrative secretary. "There were 31 total positions affected."

Beattie said the district is seeking to cut costs even further based on financial projections and a loss of student/pupil population. He added during the past three years "the district has cut 77 positions at a savings of $4 million. There's a perception out there we haven't done enough. We are doing our part to save money."

He said more layoffs will be coming.

"Those people (affected by the cuts) still have recall rights," Beattie continued. "We had to lay people off. It's a reduction in staff."

Beattie said the district's budget recovery plan for the next school year also will include having students and pupils pay to play sports.

"We also have revised our pay-to-play policy," he said. "Students participating in high school athletics next year will have to pay $200 per sport. Those in junior high school will have to pay $150 per sport. There will be no family cap. Everyone will have to pay to participate for sports."

The next board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on April 7 at John Gregg Elementary School in Bergholz.
