TORONTO - Members of the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School on Tuesday learned enrollment will increase next year.

There will be more students attending JVS next school year than this year, according to Dale Edwards, superintendent.

"I shared with the board we're expecting an increase in enrollment for next school year," he said. "We do have a few programs where we're accepting students, but most programs have seen a healthy signup."

Edwards said the school sent out 210 letters of acceptance to students for next year's enrollment along with an additional 170 students who will be returning.

"That will be close to 400 students, and that's always our goal," he said. "Enrollment was down the previous year, and we were a little disappointed. But we were able to come back for next year, and that is a positive development."

In other business, the board:

Accepted a contract with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department for a resource officer for the next school year. The officer would be stationed on campus, according to Edwards.

Approved a one-year contract for NaviGate, a web-based program that allows the school to stay in contact with Jefferson County 911 during an emergency.

"It will enable us to have direct contact with 911," Edwards said, adding any first responders to the school building would have online access to the school's infrastructure through building blueprints and surveillance cameras.

"During a safety issue, (first responders) would have access to our building's blueprints and (internal security) cameras, as long as they had a computer (in a vehicle)," said Edwards.

The cost of the one-year lease is $3,000.

Students will have two attend school two extra days due to snow days, Edwards said. Students will attend May 24 and 28, while teachers will have a work day on May 29.
