STEUBENVILLE - For 5 1/2 innings Steubenville and Edison engaged in the type of battle people expect when the Jefferson County rivals hook up.

It took Big Red less than half an inning to turn that tight 2-1 affair into an 11-1 six-inning victory Tuesday at Vaccaro Field.

"We got back on track," said Big Red head coach Fred Heatherington. "We were ready to play at the beginning of the game. We had a good performance from Anthony (Zorne).

NICE WIN — Steubenville’s John Linn leads off third base as Edison third baseman Collin Scott readies himself in the field during the sixth inning of Big Red’s 11-1 victory over the Wildcats Tuesday at Vaccaro Field. - Fred Younce

"He threw strikes and kept them off balance. The defense made plays, but hopefully we got back on track."

Zorne, a freshman, was strong for Big Red, striking out seven over six innings, and surrendering just one run in the top half of the fourth.

After Kai McClurg the sixth off with a double to lead off the sixth, Lucas Herrington followed up with a singled. An error throwing the ball in from the outfield allowed McClurg to score and put Herrington on second. Pinch-hitter Cody Saltsman then laced a single that plated Herrington and Big Red was off and running.

"Cody Saltsman came in for us in the bottom of the sixth and got a big hit to get the inning going," said Heatherington. "That's what we needed, that spark off the bench."

In all Big Red had eight different players score in the final frame, including McClurg who scored the inning's first and game's last runs on errors.

The Wildcats didn't help their own cause in the sixth as Big Red received five bases on ball and Edison committed four errors in the inning.

"The bottom line is all those errors were self-inflicted," said Edison head coach Mike Collopy. "They put the ball in play, which is what they're supposed to do, and we didn't make any plays behind our pitchers so that's what happens."

Matt Petrella led Big Red with three base hits, including a 2-run single in the sixth. John Linn also had two RBIs, driving in the game's first two runs on a triple in the second frame.

Nolan Marcus knocked in the Wildcats' lone run, pushing across Josh Pasek, who reached on a single, with a fourth inning groundout.

With the OVAC tournament looming, Steubenville (9-6) attempts to keep momentum going with a game at John Marshall today.

"We're fighting right now," said Heatherington. "Our backs are against the wall. We were 8-6 coming into the game. We just have to get to the field and get ready to play.

"If we come ready to play we have a good chance to win, and that's all we ask for."

Edison (11-3) hopes to bounce back today when it welcomes Union Local.

"This was one game, we're not worried about OVACs, we've got a game (today) we need to be ready to play," said Collopy. "If we're not ready to play for every pitch of seven innings anything can happen in baseball just like what happened today."
