Urban Mission honors its volunteers

"Our Volunteers Help Us To Grow: Growing Change, Hope and Happiness" was the theme of Urban Mission Ministries of Steubenville's annual volunteer luncheon held April 26 at the Wintersville United Methodist Church.

Planned by Linda Smith, Urban Mission program director and volunteer coordinator, the event recognized the service of hundreds of volunteers who gave of their time and talents during 2012 to the tune of 43,515 hours.

Special honors went to: Kenny McAnany, Quiet Servant Award; Donna Rodgers, Female Volunteer of the Year; Dave Ritchie, Male Volunteer of the Year; Trinity West ECHO Department, Business of the Year; and the First Presbyterian Church of Toronto pastor by the Rev. Mike Bongart, Church of the Year.

A candlelight memorial was held in remembrance of volunteers who died in 2012.

Janine Yeske of the OSU Extension office, Jefferson County, shared a lively presentation on how volunteering relates to gardening.

Isabella Niccosia and Skylar Dye of Indian Creek provided music.

The Rev. Ashley Steele, the mission's executive director, emphasized how important volunteers are and noted more volunteers are needed and appreciated.

"We are always looking for people interested in working in the office, kitchen, food distribution serving on the board, etc.," she said.
