Post 33 rallies for victory

July 12, 2013
By ED LOOMAN - Sports correspondent , The Herald-Star

STEUBENVILLE - Post 33 used a seventh inning "triple double" to earn a come-from-behind 10-6 victory over Zanesville Post 29 Thursday at Vaccaro Field.

Held pretty much in check by Zanesville starter Chris Sparks through six frames, Don Young's now 24-9 club exploded in the seventh.

Bryan Pierro worked Sparks for a lead-off walk, moved to second on John Linn's infield single and to third when Alex Young drew a free pass. Brenton Colabella (he had three hits in four official trips) sliced the deficit to 6-4 with his bases-loaded single. Linn then crossed home on Jimmy Panella's grounder to first.

The first Post 33 double came off the bat of Pat Pizzoferrato (his second of the game). His blast to deep left-center chased home Colabella and Young. Justin Corsi followed with a two-bagger down the right field line. One out later, Kai McClurg drilled a Sparks pitch to left, scoring Corsi and completing the "triple double."

Lucas Herrington's RBI single in the eighth completed the scoring for Post 33, which will visit Cadiz today in what could be its final tune-up before District 10 tournament play begins next week.

"We did a nice job of being patient at the plate," Young said. "We're doing the things we did earlier in the season that were real successful for us. That started the other night in the rainout at Toronto (Post 33 had a 4-1 lead in that contest before the rains came).

"It didn't look good at first. We were facing a pretty good pitcher. Our guys saw a lot of pitches and had some really good at bats. It paid off later in the game."

The recent stretch of wet weather has really played havoc with the Post 33 schedule (nine games have been canceled because of rain).

"That's the most (rainouts) I've ever heard of," Young added. "That's why we changed tonight's game from seven to nine. We're just trying to get in some innings."

Zanesville, which now stands at 15-16, recorded a single tally in the top of the first, Sparks belting a run-scoring double to deep center. Post 33 came right back with a pair in the home half of the frame. Young and Colabella delivered run-producing hits.

The visitors drew even in the second. Austin Every doubled and later scored thanks to a Post 33 error. Pizzoferrato's third inning two-bagger drove home Panella, giving Steubenville a 3-2 advantage.

Post 29 scored the game's next four runs. Sparks, Darian Timberlake and Matt Sellers all collected RBIs.

Jimmy Bolyog worked the first three frames for Post 33 before giving way to Chris Murphy. Young worked the eighth and nine. The seventh inning offensive explosion allowed Murphy to collect the win. Young was credited with a save, recording four of six outs via the strikeout route.

"Alex threw well in that closer role," Young said. "He came in, threw hard and did a nice job for us."

Colabella's three hits paced the Post 33 attack. Linn, Pizzoferrato and Pierro had two safeties apiece.

Post 33 was scheduled to visit Alliance for a nine-inning game on Saturday but that contest is now in jeopardy.

"That game probably will not be played, so we just talked with the Zanesville coach about maybe doing something on Sunday," Young said.

Post 33 will begin defense of its district title at Vacarro Field on Tuesday, battling Kingsville in a 2 p.m. clash.
