Although Christmas may not be on your minds, the second-annual Just Be Clause Golf Scramble will raise money to help needy families during the Christmas season at its "Golfing for Gifts" event set for Saturday at Spring Hills Golf Club in East Springfield.
Starting time is determined by individual golfers establishing tee times by calling Charlie or Dan at the golf course at (740) 543-3270.
The cost is $50 per person with the entry fee including green fees, cart, lunch and dinner at the 19th hole. The event also will include a 50-50 drawing and a Chinese auction.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the first- and second-place finishers.
All proceeds will benefit Just Be Clause, a nonprofit organization to help families during the Christmas season.
It was established by Bob and Sandy Baker of Bergholz and has grown from its more than two decades of helping those in need to assisting 60 families this past holiday, according to Sandy.
The Bakers - known as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus - are a couple who rely on contributions and fundraisers to help families with donations of toys, clothing, food and other needed items. Their inspiration for the organization started years ago because of a boy named Jed Kirkman, who was born with Down syndrome and has since passed away. His request only for a visit from Santa as a Christmas gift was honored by Bob Baker, who bought a Santa outfit to make the child's dream come true.
The desire to help others mushroomed from there for the Bakers, who were honored in recent years as Community Stars by the Herald-Star.
