STEUBENVILLE - Terrance Smith, 24, of 972 Sherman Ave. was in critical condition in a Pittsburgh hospital today after being shot in the right jaw from 70 yards away late Thursday evening, City Police reported.
Police were called around 11:30 p.m. Thursday about shots being fired and found Smith outside a couple houses away from his residence.
He was taken by ambulance to the North End ball field, where he was loaded into a medical helicopter and flown to Pittsburgh.
Police found several shell casings about 70 yards away from where they found Smith.
Police Chief William McCafferty said there were no witnesses to the shooting. Residents reported it was quiet before the shooting began, he said.
McCafferty said there are no suspects or a motive for the shooting at this time.
Police detectives and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation were called to the scene.
McCafferty said a house in the 900 block of Sherman Avenue and a brick wall outside another residence were struck by gunfire.
Because of the distance between the victim and the shell casings, McCafferty said police aren't sure if Smith was the intended victim. McCafferty said it appears Smith was walking home.
This is the third time this year that shots have been fired in the 900 block of Sherman Avenue.
