STEUBENVILLE - A fugitive who escaped from a work detail on Tuesday remained at large as of Friday evening despite a countywide manhunt to find him, according to Sheriff Fred Abdalla.
Benjamin Delguzzi, 27, of Steubenville walked away from a work detail Tuesday at Friendship Park while serving a 180-day sentence out of Steubenville Municipal Court for assault stemming from a domestic dispute.
Law enforcement thought they were close to nabbing Delguzzi Wednesday after a Cadiz Police officer sighted him and fired a Taser, but Delguzzi managed to escape. He reportedly then broke into a residence near Cadiz and stole clothing. Numerous agencies, including the Ohio Highway State Patrol, have been part of search efforts, but he remains at large.
Abdalla said it was only a matter of time before he was caught.
"We keep getting reports of (citizens) seeing him, but he keeps playing games," said the sheriff, adding he may tire of being chased and eventually turn himself in. "Someone will find him at some point in the near future."
Delguzzi originally was charged with felonious assault on a police officer, but it was reduced to assault in Steubenville Municipal Court.
