WINTERSVILLE - Jefferson County welcomed more than 100 teens from across the nation last week as Crossroads Christian Church hosted the 2013 Wintersville Group Work Camp.

Leesa Rawls of Myrtle Beach, S.C., served as the week's director. Rawls has been working with the group since 1996. The camp, based out of Loveland, Colo., sponsors different sites all summer throughout the United States.

"We have 11 youth groups from Delaware, New Jersey, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maryland, Michigan and New York that participated in the local camp," she explained. "We are working on 19 houses throughout Jefferson County alone."

Jeff Greco, Crossroads Christian Church pastor, said several local businesses, organizations and individuals helped fund the projects.

"We are pleased to team with Group Cares to help provide this vital service to our friends and neighbors," he stated. "We are called to help bear one another's burdens in this life and this is but one way to do just that."

Rawls added that each student pays $400 to participate.

"Not only do the students come in and spend a week of their summer volunteering, helping those in need and sleeping in school gymnasiums, but they spend time before fundraising to get there as well," she stated. "That is pretty impressive and noble."

Group Care facilitates Christian mission camps for youth that serve a dual purpose - they're a summer camp and mission trip in one, Greco noted. At workcamps, youth groups come together to serve individuals and communities, while building strong, long-lasting relationships with their friends and youth leaders.
