Drawing dinner to benefit United Way

WHEELING - The September to Remember Reverse Drawing Dinner to benefit the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley will be held Sept. 24 at Wheeling Island Hotel Casino and Racetrack.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

A $10,000 first prize and other prizes will be awarded. Tickets are $160 to be entered into the drawing only, $180 for the drawing and dinner and $200 for a drawing ticket and two dinners.

There were 225 tickets printed for the drawing. For tickets or reservations, call (304) 232-4625.

The Brooke County United Way merged with the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley several years ago. Agencies supported by it include the Brooke County Committee on Aging, which operates the Brooke County Senior Center; Brooke County Public Library and Salvation Army.

Blood drive to be held Saturday

WELLSBURG - The Wellsburg Women of the Moose will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Moose Lodge at 844 Main St.

Doughnuts or a hot lunch will be provided to donors. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments may be made by calling Linda Porreca at (740) 264-4286 or (304) 737-1552. Donors should bring photo identification.

Applefest pageant to be held

WELLSBURG - The Wellsburg Applefest Pageant will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 22 at the Wellsburg Moose Lodge at 844 Main St.

The event is open to boys 6 and under and girls 18 and under and will include a talent competition and a high point overall winner this year.

The winners will be crowned by Miss West Virginia during the Wellsburg Applefest, which will be held Oct. 4-6 and is in its 35th year.

Crochet class to meet Wednesday

WELLSBURG - A free crochet class led by Linda Collett will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Brooke County Public Library.

The class is open to adults of all levels of knowledge. Participants should bring their own supplies and projects and will receive help if they need.

Library to show science-fiction film

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will show "Oblivion" at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The PG-13-rated post-apocalyptic film stars Tom Cruise. Call (304) 737-1551 to reserve a seat and popcorn.

Clothes closet needs donations

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Clothes Closet needs new underwear and socks or monetary donations so it may provide them to children and teens at Brooke County Schools.

Denise Spensky, president of the Brooke County Council PTA, said the group is preparing to distribute clothing from its clothes closet but lacks funds normally used to purchase underwear and socks. The group may only distribute new underwear and socks.

The group also welcomes donations of new or gently used coats or shoes.

A drop-box for donations has been established at the clothes closet at Pleasant Avenue and 26th Street. Those interested in making monetary donations can call Bobbie Jo Parsons at (304) 670-0396 or Denise Spensky at (304) 527-2516.
