School to hold playground dedication, open house

From staff reports , The Herald-Star

WINTERSVILLE - Jefferson County Christian School's Back to School fellowship and open house will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at the school at 125 Fernwood Road.

The evening will begin with a playground dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Christian Fellowship Foundation awarded the Jefferson County Christian School a $100,000 grant during the summer of 2012 to design and build a fully equipped and handicapped accessible playground for JCCS students. The dedication was delayed until completing the project this year when the last piece was added, a state-of-the-art NEOS 360, which is a playsystem combining video game speed with arerobic activity.

The playground, Christian Fellowship Foundation Park, is equipped with a play structure that has five slides, a swing set, a basketball hoop, hopscotch, chutes and ladders and the high-tech NEOS 360. Playing NEOS delivers a workout comparable to jogging or playing soccer, raising heart rates by an average of 20 percent, officials said.

"It's a great way for our students to get some exercise, break up the school day, and it's a lot of fun," says Julie Marshall, director of development.

"We feel so blessed to have received the grant and to have the playground. Many schools aren't able to give their students the opportunity to get daily exercise, either from lack of space or the funds to purchase and maintain playground equipment," Marshall said.

The grant was awarded with the intent that the playground be open, not only to students, but to all the children of the community to use and enjoy while having the opportunity to see the truth of Scripture displayed on the fence, school officials said.
