During a recent meeting with the college's engineering technology leadership, John M. Cooper, district sales manager for Vulcraft, said the company has an immediate need for three additional detailers, and there are plans for further growth in the near future. Vulcraft is an engineered products group of Nucor Corp. and is the leading producer of steel joists and decking in the U.S. Vulcraft plants produce more than 685,000 tons of joists and joist girders and 430,000 tons of steel decking from manufacturing facilities in seven states.

The Wheeling office provides support and expertise to fabricator customers across the country with a focus on large, multifaceted composite steel deck projects. The office team comprises sales, estimating, project management and CAD detailers specializing in high-rise, hospital, convention center and stadium construction. Examples of non-residential projects on which this office worked are several World Trade Center structures, including the new Freedom Tower.

Detailers must be able to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings, specifications and design requirements related to steel joists and steel deck.

"We are continuing our long-term relationship with Eastern Gateway," Cooper said as he discussed curriculum needs with professor Eric Exley, drafting and design program director.

The discussion included planning a field trip for students to visit the Vulcraft office and for Vulcraft personnel to make presentations to the classes.

"Eastern Gateway's technical programs have the unique capability of responding to employer needs and thus training our students to be as current as possible for today's job market," Exley said. "Working with companies like Vulcraft assures that our graduates will be ready for the world of work. We also welcome the opportunity to have internships for our students while they are taking classes."

Exley is encouraging area high school students and residents to consider Eastern Gateway's drafting and design program for a career opportunity with jobs available now and well into the future.

Job openings are listed at www.nucor.com and may be searched on www.careerbuilder.com. Eastern Gateway is working with Ohio Means Jobs to assist its students with job placement.
