Monsignor George Adams

ADAMS, The Rev. Msgr. George J., 88, of Broad Street Brockway, Pa., died October 2, 2013, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Born on August 13, 1925, in Toronto, OH, he was the son of the late George J. and Anna Karaffa Adams.

He is survived by two sisters, Mary Catherine (Alex) Keeney of Littlestown, Pa; Barbara Evelyn Shields of Horseshoe Bay, Texas and four brothers Cornelius "Doc" (Eillen) Adams of San Antonio, Texas; John Francis Adams of Brockport, NY; Richard (Gloria) Adams of Brockway, Pa; Thomas (Jeannie) Adams of San Antonio, Texas, and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceeded in death by a sister, Andrea Ann Reitan.

He was ordained May 1, 1950, by Bishop John King Mussio of the Steubenville Diocese at St. Joseph Church in Bridgeport, OH. He celebrated his first Solemn High Mass six days later at St. Tobias Church. Moving back to Brockway with his family in 1940 after his freshman year at Toronto High School, he attended the Brockway/Snyder High School as a sophomore and a junior. He spent his senior year at St. Charles High School in Columbus, OH, a preparatory school graduating in 1943.

He enrolled at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, received a bachelor's degree in 1946, and completed theology studies at St. Mary of the West Seminary in Norwood, OH, before his ordination to the priesthood in 1950. His first assignment after ordination was as assistant pastor of St. Benedict Church, Cambridge, Ohio. Other assignments, all in the Steubenville Diocese, served in succession, were: administrator at St. Mary Church, Lafferty; assistant pastor and school teacher at St. Mary Church, Marietta; chaplain at Cambridge State Hospital; administrator at St. Patrick Church, Buchtel, and the Modoc Mission; teacher at Central Catholic High School, Steubenville; administrator at Nativity Mission, Hammondsville; aide in the diocese Chancery Office, while in residence at St. Stanislaus Church, Steubenville. He also was assistant procurator at St. John Vianney Seminary, Steubenville, while administrating at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Carrollton, and then became pastor of St. Thomas More Church, Bloomingdale.

In 1978 he became pastor of Ss. Peter & Paul Church, Lore City and in 1986 was appointed pastor of St. Sylvester Church, Woodsfield, also serving for a time as administrator of St. Andrew Mission, Senecaville. While pastor at St. Sylvester, he was dean of Visitation Deanery from 1989 until his retirement in 1995. He also served as diocesan consultor for several years. After his retirement he has remained active, diligent and dedicated in continuing to perform his priestly duties, being on call to substitute for pastors in various parishes in both the Diocese of Erie and Steubenville, as well as assisting on a regular basis at his home parish of St. Tobias. In recognition of his active involvement in the life of the Brockway community, he was honored as Man of the Year in 2010 and Sportsman of the Year in 2012.

Calling hours will be on Monday, October 7 from 5-9 p.m. at the Carlson-Shugarts Funeral Home Inc. in Brockway and on Tuesday, October 8 from 2-9 p.m. at St. Tobias Church also in Brockway. A parish vigil service will be held Tuesday evening at 8 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 9 at 11 a.m. also at St. Tobias with the Most Rev. Jeffrey M. Monforton, STD., Bishop of Steubenville presiding.

Burial will be in the Toronto Union Cemetery in Toronto, OH.
