Steel Valley Antique Car Club still motoring

The Steel Valley Antique Car Club is alive and well.

And it isn't just for people who own old cars.

Just having an interest in them and cars in general will do, according to Harriett Hinchcliffe, a longtime member of the group who recently went on one of its outings.

In this case, the one-day tour was a road trip to New Athens to the Franklin Museum where they were served lunch. Then it was on to Flushing for a stop at the Underground Railroad Museum, then onto Mehlman's Cafeteria in St. Clairsville.

"It was a great day," Hinchcliffe said. There were 13 cars and 23 members on this particular outing.

The family-oriented club has approximately 41 families. Members have cars from the early 1920s through the 1970s.

Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Shorac Family Center located on Fernwood Road, Wintersville.

That makes Tuesday the next meeting, and newcomers are more than welcome to attend, according to Hinchcliffe.

Officers are: president, Tom Freund; vice president, Bob Becker; secretary, Nina Cullen; and treasurer, Joanne Bolyog.

"Its goals are and always have been for the preservation of all automobiles," Hinchcliffe said.

"We take our cars to the road several times a year on tours, enjoy a corn roast, get together on Memorial Day and participate in the East Springfield and the Richmond Memorial Day parades, then have a covered-dish, hot dog picnic after the parades and have both a Thanksgiving dinner and a Christmas dinner," Hinchcliffe said in explaining the group's activities.

Hinchcliffe and her husband, George, have been members of the group since the late 1960s.

"I think what George and I enjoy most about this group is that we are all like family with the same likes and interests," she said. "We care about each other plus have our love for antique cars," she said.
