Phone service disrupted by wire theft

WELLSBURG - Landline telephone and Internet service for many Brooke County residents was disrupted for several hours beginning at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday following the theft of about 300 feet of phone wire, according to the Brooke County Sheriff's Department.

According to police reports, officials with Frontier Communications found the wire missing from an area of state Route 67 near Hukill Run Road.

Brooke County Sheriff Chuck Jackson said landline service for the county's emergency 911 center was affected during that time, but the center was able to receive 911 calls made with cellular phones and to communicate by radio with emergency personnel.

He said the theft is under investigation.

Limited traffic starts Friday

STEUBENVILLE - Traffic at the John Scott Highway and Mall Drive intersection will be reduced to one lane starting at 7 a.m. Friday and continuing through Saturday.

City Engineer Michael Dolak said the limited lane access is for culvert pipe installation across Mall Drive and the full depth pavement widening and replacement at the intersection.

"We are advising motorists to use Lovers Lane and Sinclair Avenue to avoid delays. Motorists should allow extra time for their travels because of periodically stopped traffic. Motorists are also advised to drive slowly through the construction zone," stated Dolak.
