Alice Burge

BURGE, Alice V., 96, of Brilliant, OH, passed away peacefully Saturday October 19, 2013, surrounded by her family in the home where she was born.

She was born April 14, 1917, in Brilliant, OH, a daughter of the late Wallace and Myrtle (Lisle) Miller.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Murt Burge in 1968; an infant daughter, Mary Elizabeth Burge; four brothers, Clarence, Robert and Jimmy Miller and George Lisle; and two grandsons, Doug Simpson and Mike Myers; and a niece, Connie Miller.

Alice has always been a caregiver to numerous families, friends and neighbors during her lifetime. She was a homemaker, Girl Scout leader and always a homeroom mother for her children. Alice was a volunteer cancer nurse having gone through training and became certified in 1953. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Brilliant and also the former Rebekah Lodge of Brilliant where she was a financial secretary for over 50 years. She was also very active in the Democratic Party where she was a committee person and a poll worker for more than 50 years. She was also one of the original people to pass a petition to get water in the south end of Brilliant. Alice loved to play euchre with her family and she also played in various card clubs throughout the years. She was everybody's best friend and will be dearly missed by many.

She is survived by two daughters, Vivian (Ed) Simpson and Bette (Clem) Marsili of Brilliant; two sons, Gerald L. (Bettye) Burge, Sr. of Martinez, GA and Audie Burge of Weirton, WV; four grandchildren, Joe Burge, Blaine Burge, Keith Myers and Ryan Simpson; a great-grandson, Colton Burge; a devoted and lifelong friend, Ralph Goddard; her adopted son, Vince Pino; best friend, Peg McDonald; unofficial daughter, Lillian Kachur; a niece, Valorie Morocco; a nephew, Robert Miller Jr.; precious great-nieces, Betty Miller and Darla Miller; a great-nephew, Mark Miller; and a family friend, Karen Lindsey.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. William Johns and his staff; the devoted caregivers from Valley Hospice; and her two dear at home caregivers, Pam Degenhardt and Helene Holman, for the wonderful care they gave Alice.

Friends will be received at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 712 Third St., Brilliant, on Tuesday from 3-7 p.m. and also on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of her funeral service at 11 a.m., with Rev. John D. Ater, officiating. Interment will follow at New Alexandria Cemetery.
