Area horse-drawn carriage company offers funeral service

November 3, 2013
From staff reports , The Herald-Star

WELLSVILLE - Carriage Limousine Service has expanded its services and fleet, now providing funeral services to clients in Ohio, West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania, company officials announced.

"We recently expanded to provide funeral services because we felt it was natural progression for our business," said Carriage Limousine Service Founder Richard Steed.

"A horse-drawn carriage is a timeless vehicle, but it can also be very symbolic. In the case of funerals, we wanted to provide clients with another option for transporting their loved one to their final resting place - to make that final journey extraordinary."

Carriage Limousine Service offers two funeral carriages: The first is an enclosed horse-drawn funeral coach large enough to carry a standard size casket or urn.

"Like all of our carriages, our coach was custom built by us and can travel either from the funeral to the cemetery or from a midway point where the casket can transferred from a hearse into the coach.

"The second is a caisson style hearse" Steed said. Most commonly used in state funerals, a caisson is an open-air hearse on which a casket sits. In the case of a military funeral, either hearse can be followed by a caparisoned (rider less) horse. This is a centuries-old practice in which a horse is adorned in ornamental coverings with a pair of boots reversed in the stirrups symbolizing the soldier will never ride again.

Celebrating its 15th year in 2013, Carriage Limousine Service is a family-owned business. Founded in 1998 by Steed, the company has grown during the years and has a fleet of six carriages for weddings, proms, parades, parties and funerals.

All of Carriage Limousine Services' carriages are pulled by the family's white Percheron draft horses - George, Pearl, Jessica and King.
