November 25, 2013
The Herald-Star

NEW CUMBERLAND - With work begun on a new secure entrance for the Hancock County Courthouse, county commissioners on Thursday awarded a bid for another courthouse improvement project.

Kell's Heating & Cooling of Chester had the low bid of $58,320 for a project to upgrade the heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems in the old, stone courthouse. Commissioners do not yet have a start date for the project.

Work has begun on construction of a more secure front entrance to the courthouse. The entrance will be reconfigured to accommodate metal detection equipment and security personnel. Foot traffic is being temporarily rerouted to an entrance on the north side of the 1968 courthouse annex.

Also Thursday, commissioners:

Re-appointed Charlie Mitchell as an at-large member of the Brooke-Hancock-Jefferson Metropolitan Planning Commission.

Appointed Joe Ghenne of Weirton to the Hancock County Historical Museum Commission to fill a vacancy left by Linda McNeil.

Agreed to write a letter in support of Weirton Medical Center's effort to add a 20-bed, acute care facility to the hospital.

Authorized the $585 purchase of a sound suppressor with muzzle break for the Hancock County Sheriff's Department.

Approved the hiring of Marc Amendola and Dan Foglietti as part-time courtroom bailiffs and courthouse security officers.

Approved the hiring of Stephanie Perkins of Chester to the Hancock County Sheriff's Reserve.
