The annual dinner meeting of the Upper Ohio Valley Opera Guild held Nov. 25 at St. Florian Hall in Wintersville included the announcement of this year's $1,000 scholarship recipient; the presentation of the slate of board members; and a repeat performance by the Youngstown Connection.
Event coordinator Anita Jackson, first vice president, welcomed the estimated 140 in attendance and opened the evening with a prayer. Tom Graham led the audience in singing the national anthem, which was followed by the treasurer's report given by Joe Leonard.
Joyce Ryan-Orlando, immediate past president and chair of the nominating committee, presented the slate of board members who will be continuing for the 2014-16 term, including Dottie Bossert, Margaret Frederick, Christine Hargrave, Teresa Kropka, Mary Jo Rinaldi and Ryan-Orlando.
Caitlin Luck of Wellsburg, daughter of Jeffrey and Jane Luck of Wellsburg, is the $1,000 scholarship recipient. She is studying applied vocal performance, opera, at Slippery Rock University. Josephine Irvine-Groves, scholarship chair and board member, announced that Caitlin Luck, a music major at Slippery Rock University, is the recipient of the guild's $1,000 scholarship.
The evening also included the participation of Mary Jo Rinaldi, guild president, and dinner music was provided by Theresa Jurasko, coordinator of music ministry at the Franciscan University of Steubenville.
After the business meeting and dinner, the Youngstown Connection performed under the direction of Carol Baird. The group consists of high school and college-age students who sing and dance to tunes from Broadway musicals, patriotic and contemporary tunes.
