Veterans group holds meeting

SMITHFIELD - The Jefferson County Veterans Association members heard about progress on the Fort Friendship Memorial Wall from Charles Greene, one of the wall founders and volunteer laborers.

"There are 600 inscribed bricks in place and the first phase of the project will be be completed when the weather cooperates," said Greene.

New members taken into the association are Fred Abdalla, Jack Ernest, Larry Weldon, Charles Wells and John Kafana.

An election of officers was held with William Smythe remaining as commander. Frank Santa is vice commander; Barry Bardone, adjutant; Tony Phillippi, finance officer; Charles Greene, assistant finance officer; Jack Campbell, chaplain; Jay Kolenc, sergeant-at-arms; and Ed Waldman, Walter Jancura, Don Richards, Kolenc and Rick Male, trustees.

Memberships dues are being collected for 2014.

The next meeting will be Jan. 8 rather than the regular date of the first Wednesday of the month.

Karaoke fun night from 6-9 p.m. today

EAST SPRINGFIELD - A karaoke fun night with disc jockey Chelsea Matta will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the East Springfield Community Center, which is located on county Road 39 next to the East Springfield Volunteer Fire Department.

Admission is $3 with $1 going into the singer's reward jar. Matta will give each singer a ticket, and a drawing will determine which singer gets the winnings.

There is no admission charged for those under age 10.

The karaoke singing is open to all ages.

There will be free pizza with drink.

"Come on out for a great night of fun and sing your favorite songs," an event promoter said.

There also will be a door prize drawing entitling the winner to two free dinners at the East Springfield Community Center's monthly fundraiser.

Saline Township trustees to meet

HAMMONDSVILLE - The Saline Township trustees will hold a reorganizational meeting at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, followed by a regular meeting, at the township building at 164 county Road 50A.
