WEIRTON - The city water board voted unanimously Thursday to purchase necessary replacement equipment for the treatment plant.

Press cloths for the treatment plant sludge press are pressure washed monthly in an effort to keep them clean, but the cloths being used are a year older than their two-year predicted life span and are reportedly looking "pretty clogged up." The press cloths are used for separation of liquids and solids in the treatment of sludge. The board voted to purchase replacements from Siemens for $3,192, plus freight costs.

Members also voted to replace a six-paddle jar tester for the treatment plant for $2,750. This tool simulates a full-scale water treatment process, which allows operators to test chemical reactions before implementing methods on the entire water supply. The tester being replaced is more than 30 years old.

Thomas Maher, city finance director, informed the board the new online bill pay system is live and functioning, at least for payments by check. The processing for credit card payments operates through a third party, Magic-Wrighter Inc., and is not up and running yet. Residents who wish to pay utility bills online with checks in the meantime can visit www.cityofweirton.com and click on "Utility Billing" under the "Government" heading. The website will prompt customers to register on their first visit with an account number, service location, e-mail address, username and password.
